Almond Turner began his law enforcement career as an officer with the City of Covington Police Department in 1972. He served as the department's Crime Prevention Officer from 1974 to 1978. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1978 and was assigned to the Criminal Investigative Division. In 1984 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and continued his assignment in the division until he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Police in December 1997.
Almond Turner was one of the first members of the Covington/Newton County S.W.A.T Team, serving from 1978 to 1984. He was instrumental in establishing a crime prevention program for the police department, making presentation to business, schools, churches, and other civic orginizations. In addition, he has beenin charge of security for many local event, including The Dixie Boys World Series and the 1996 Olympics. In 2005 chosen as a delegate for the GILEE where he travel to Israel and recieved training on terrorism.
Almond Turner is a 1968 graduate of the historic R.L. Cousins High School and attended Fort Valley State College, recieving an Associate of Art degree Criminal Justice and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University. He is a 1982 graduate of the FBI National (Quanico,VA) as well as a 2002 graduate of Columbia University Command College. He is a member of the Georgia Association of Chief of Police and the International Association of Chief of Police.
In 1996, he was elected to the Newton County BOE and was re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2008. He was recently selected as a mentor to new elected school board members for the State of Georgia. He is a member of the Community Band, and serves on the boards of NC YMCA and the nNewton County's Clean and Beautiful.
Mr. Turner was born 8-21-1950, in Covington Georgia to Lavancy Maxey Turner and the late Almond Turner. He is married to the formall Anita Franklin and they have 3 children Dwahn, Shaye,Shundra and six grandchildren. He is a member of the Springfield Baptist Church.
